Claude certification renewal: free if you are on time, a full exam if you are not
Claude certification renewal is free and non-proctored if you do it before the date, and a full paid exam if you do not. The rules are identical on all four tracks, the first credentials expire from March 2027, and the only thing that changes is whether you noticed in time.
Claude certification renewal works the same way on all four tracks. Every credential is valid for 12 months from the date it is awarded. Renew before that date and you review what has changed since you certified, then complete a free, non-proctored assessment on the Anthropic Partner Academy. Let it lapse and you retake the full exam at the full fee. The first credentials reach that date from March 2027.
The clock starts when the credential is awarded
Not when you booked, not when you sat the exam, and not when the badge appeared in your inbox: the twelve months run from the award date. The guides give the reasoning directly: the technology underneath moves quickly, so the credential is time-limited to keep what it certifies current. The same term applies to CCAO-F, CCDV-F, CCAR-F and CCAR-P.
What on-time Claude certification renewal involves
The partner FAQ answers “What does recertification involve, and what does it cost?” in two sentences: you review what has changed since you certified and complete a free, non-proctored assessment on the Anthropic Partner Academy, and on-time renewal is free. The guides repeat it word for word. No camera, no room scan, no Pearson appointment.
The review half deserves attention. The guides are versioned and the current set is Version 1.0, effective July 2026; if a later version has moved domains, changed weights or added task statements, the review is where you find out. What is and is not published about the assessment
Because nobody has renewed yet, the assessment is described only in outline. Here is the boundary between what the official sources state and what they leave open, as of 17 September 2026.

Anything you read elsewhere about the assessment being a short quiz, open book, or unlimited-attempt is an inference, not a published fact. Treat it as such until Anthropic says otherwise.

The jump between the first two rows is the whole reason this post exists. Missing the date does not buy a late fee or a grace period: the Exam Policy says an expired certification can no longer be renewed and must be re-earned, which puts you back at the start: register, pay, book a proctored slot, and sit the whole exam, with the 14, 30 and 90 day retake ladder waiting if it goes wrong. Nothing about the renewal route survives the expiry date
The free assessment is available while the credential is current and not afterwards. There is no partial credit for having held it, and no shortened path back. A date you did not notice is the entire difference between a non-proctored review and a paid exam.
The March 2027 wave
The first Claude certification exam, CCAR-F, opened in March 2026 with a six-month validity. The FAQ now states that credentials earned before 30 June 2026 under that term were extended automatically to 12 months from their original earned date. So the earliest CCAR-F holders reach their expiry from March 2027, and they will be the first people to go through Claude certification recertification at all.
Two things follow. First, Anthropic has not yet said how that cohort will be handled: the assessment as described, or a full retake under the significant-change caveat. Watch the FAQ rather than assuming. Second, if you hold one of those early CCAR-F credentials, the guide you certified against predates Version 1.0 (effective July 2026), so a full retake would be sat on the current five-domain exam. Putting it somewhere you will actually see it
The practical failure here is not misunderstanding the rules but never being reminded of them. The credential is quiet for eleven months and then the window closes. Record two dates the day your badge arrives: the expiry itself, and a reminder about a month earlier that leaves time to do the review properly and to absorb a full retake if the exception applies. What you can say while it is current
A time-limited credential changes how it should be described. “Certified since 2026” claims something the credential does not support once it has lapsed, and a resume entry with no end date implies it is still live.
