How to read a Claude exam question: the ask, then the constraint

Well-built exam items contain one sentence that decides them, and it is rarely the last one. Finding it before you read the options is the single technique that buys the most time.

The fastest way to read a Claude exam question is not front to back. Read the final line first, so you know what is being asked. Then go back through the scenario hunting for the sentence that constrains the answer. Only then read the options — by which point most of them have already stopped being eligible, and you are making a smaller decision than the item was designed to require.

The three parts of an item

Every scenario item on every track has the same three parts, in this printed order: a situation, a constraint somewhere inside it, and an ask. The situation is the longest part and carries the least weight — it establishes who, what and how much, and almost none of that decides anything.

The constraint is the working part. It is usually a single sentence, it is frequently in the middle rather than at the end, and it is often phrased as context rather than as the point. The ask is the final line, and it is where candidates lose marks in a different way: by answering a slightly different question from the one printed.

Reading the options while still holding the whole scenario is how a well-written distractor gets its chance.

The reason this order works is that options are written to be attractive while you are still deciding what matters. Once you know the constraint, an option either respects it or does not, and that is a yes-or-no test rather than a judgment call.

The fourth is the one people miss, because an absence does not announce itself. A scenario where nobody has stated what a good answer looks like, or where the policy does not cover the case, is telling you the missing thing is the answer — covered in human in the loop and governance and responsible use.

Pressure in a scenario is a test, not a fact

A deadline, an unavailable approver or an angry customer is there to see whether you treat it as something that changes what is permitted. It does not. Where a constraint and a pressure conflict in a stem, the constraint is the one the item is about.

Read the ask literally

Three habits pay for themselves here. Notice whether the question asks for the most defensible action or the first action, because those are different answers when a scenario has an obvious eventual fix and a necessary immediate step.

Notice whether it asks what to do or what went wrong; a diagnosis item wants the cause, and offering a remedy to it is answering a question that was not asked, which is the trap set out in troubleshooting on the Claude exams. Eliminate on mechanism

The most reliable elimination is not about which option sounds better. It is about which options cannot work given how the thing actually behaves — an option that relies on the model reliably noticing something it has no way to detect, or on an instruction holding where a guarantee was required, has failed on mechanism rather than on judgment.

Mechanism failures are objective, which makes them fast. Two options that both survive a mechanism check are where the real work starts, and by then you have spent thirty seconds rather than two minutes. When two options both survive

This is by design. A well-built item contains at least two defensible options, and the difference between them is usually one of three things: one is structural and the other is instructional, one addresses the cause and the other the symptom, or one is available in the described situation and the other assumes something the scenario did not give you.

Run those three comparisons in that order. If neither is structural, neither addresses a cause and both are available, then the item is probably testing something narrower — reread the ask, because the discriminator is more often in the question than in the options. And if you are still choosing, flag it and move: an item you spend four minutes on has cost you two others, which is a worse trade than a coin flip. The timing structure is in the exam-day post.

How should I read a Claude exam question?
