The retrieval one needs care, because the answer differs by exam and getting it backwards is expensive either way. Architect Foundations excludes embedding and vector database implementation detail. Design is assessed, plumbing is not, and which side of that line you need depends on which exam you booked.
Why these and not others
A pattern runs through the whole list, and once you see it the exclusions stop needing to be memorised: everything excluded is implementation, operations or provenance. Everything retained is judgment under constraints.
That rule generalises further than the list does. Faced with a topic the guide does not mention either way, ask which side of that line it falls on. Anything that is really a question about running or building the platform is unlikely to be assessed; what the exam does test is consistently the decision you would have to defend afterwards.
Read the qualifier, not the headline
Several exclusions are partial. One rules out caching implementation detail while still expecting you to know the feature exists. Another rules out language and framework specifics except where a tool or schema genuinely requires them. Treating a partial exclusion as total is how a candidate skips something that does appear.
Three that come with a catch
The partial exclusions are worth knowing individually, because each one draws its own line. Caching is excluded at the implementation level but not as a concept. Programming-language and framework detail is excluded except where configuring a tool or a schema needs it — which is a real carve-out, given how much of the developer and architect material is about exactly that. Only one exam publishes this
The honest caveat, and it matters. Of the four certifications, only Claude Certified Architect – Foundations publishes an out-of-scope section. The Associate and Developer guides have no equivalent, so nothing here should be read as a programme-wide exclusion.
